Abisko in February
Wow! I'm tempted to leave it at that. Six nights at Abisko Mountain Lodge - other than the smallish room and twin beds (which we knew about in advance) we have nothing but praise. Comfy, really great local food, attentive service and a good location. We had a good dollop of luck: 5 nights of Auroras, settled clear weather, beautiful sunny days. The husky tour in the park was fantastic - though, as
they've not had much snow and wooden dog sleds are unforgiving, it was very bumpy. The evening photography session was so useful. The pro-photographer, Kyle, was a fantastic source of knowledge. Two or so hours flew by and then I had to be frog-marched back! The picture below has not been photoshopped. The pink/red on the snow was caused by a head torch and a fire burning inside a Lavvu. The visit to the Sami was an eye-opener. Playing with reindeer, sledding, swapping stores in the Lavvu - all wonderful. However, as seems to be a familiar story the world over, they are a troubled indigenous people. We were fortunate, in a way, as there was a Swedish couple on the tour who knew the right questions to ask - and then the rest of us started learning.
