Northern Lights Holidays in Finland

Finland is at the heart of our Northern Lights programme, combining dark Arctic skies, snowy wilderness and some of the widest choice of experiences in Lapland.

Our Northern Lights holidays in Finland range from Northern Lights short breaks and glass-roofed cabin stays to activity-packed family Northern Lights holidays and longer Aurora tours. Depending on the trip, you can combine dedicated Northern Lights hunts with husky sledding, reindeer encounters, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and some extraordinary places to stay.

For families in particular, Finland offers huge choice. There are magical Father Christmas holidays for younger children, adventurous Lapland holidays for older families and teenagers, and Northern Lights holidays where the Arctic experience is every bit as important as what appears in the sky.

Why choose Finland for a Northern Lights holiday?

Husky sled dogs on a winter safari in Finnish Lapland

Finland gives you much more than a place to stand outside and wait for the Aurora with your fingers crossed.

Across Finnish Lapland, our holidays combine excellent Northern Lights locations with unforgettable Arctic experiences. You could drive a husky team through snow-covered forest, travel by reindeer sleigh, explore by snowmobile, stay in a wilderness hotel or fall asleep beneath the northern sky in a glass-roofed Aurora Cabin.

There is also an unusually wide choice of holiday styles. A couple might choose a quiet wilderness escape or glass igloo break; a family can build the trip around snow, huskies and Arctic adventure; while travellers who want the Northern Lights to be the main event can choose itineraries with several dedicated Aurora hunts and learn more about our Northern Lights hunting formula.

If time is limited, explore our Northern Lights short breaks. For one of Lapland’s most memorable ways to stay, see our glass igloo holidays and Aurora Cabins.

Where to see the Northern Lights in Finland

Snow-covered cabins and pine trees in Finnish Lapland

Our Finland Northern Lights holidays stretch across Finnish Lapland, with each location offering a slightly different experience.

Saariselkä is one of our most versatile destinations, combining a compact resort, skiing and a huge choice of Arctic activities with easy access to surrounding wilderness. It is also home to some of our best-known glass-roofed Aurora Cabins.

Inari sits beside vast Lake Inari and combines excellent Aurora potential with wilderness, Sámi culture and a choice of lakeside and village accommodation.

Nellim is smaller and more secluded, making it an excellent choice when serious Aurora hunting and a remote Finnish wilderness setting are high on the list.

Pyhä sits beside Pyhä-Luosto National Park and works particularly well for active travellers and families, with skiing, huskies, snowmobiles and Aurora hunts all available against a beautiful fell landscape.

You can also travel to locations including Levi, Ranua, Muotka, Nangu, Menesjärvi, Harriniva, Jeris and Rovaniemi, so our Travel Experts can help match the right part of Finland to the kind of holiday you actually want.

Northern Lights holidays for families in Finland

Finland is one of our most important destinations for family Northern Lights holidays, and there isn’t one version of a family trip that suits everyone.

For younger children, Lapland can still be wonderfully magical. Snowy forests, huskies, reindeer and playing in proper Arctic snow are memorable enough on their own, while selected holidays also include carefully chosen Father Christmas experiences. Our Lapland Father Christmas holidays are designed around the whole family adventure rather than treating a Santa visit as the only reason to travel.

Once children get older, Finland arguably becomes even more exciting. Snowmobiling, longer husky safaris, unusual accommodation and heading out after dark to search for the Northern Lights can turn Lapland into a genuine family adventure. See our Lapland holidays for older families and teenagers for trips designed with that age group in mind.

Or, if seeing the Aurora together is the priority, explore our wider collection of Northern Lights family holidays.

Northern Lights packages and tours in Finland

There is no single formula for a Finland Northern Lights holiday.

Our programme includes Northern Lights tours, package holidays and short breaks across Finnish Lapland. Some put Aurora hunting firmly at the centre of the itinerary, while others balance evenings beneath the Arctic sky with days filled with huskies, reindeer, snowmobiling and other winter experiences.

If you are short on time, explore our Northern Lights short breaks. Families can browse our Northern Lights family holidays, including trips designed specifically for younger children and older families. For a stay that makes the accommodation part of the experience, see our glass igloo holidays and Aurora Cabins.

Finland is also one of the best destinations for combining Aurora hunting with classic Arctic activities. If dog sledding is high on your list, take a look at our husky sledding holidays, or choose one of our wider Finland itineraries combining several experiences in one trip.

Whether you’re looking for a family Lapland holiday, an active week in the wilderness, a romantic glass-cabin escape or a dedicated Northern Lights tour, the holidays on this page are designed to help you find the right style of Finland trip.

Glass igloos and Aurora Cabins in Finland

Finland is home to many of the glass-roofed cabins and Arctic stays people picture when they imagine a Northern Lights holiday.

At destinations including Saariselkä, Levi, Pyhä, Inari and Ranua, you can choose holidays featuring glass igloos, Aurora Cabins and other accommodation designed to give you a view of the northern sky without having to spend the entire night standing outside.

Some work particularly well for couples, while others have layouts suitable for families. You can stay beneath glass for the whole trip in some destinations or make it one special night within a wider Lapland holiday.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Finland?

Guests watching the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland

Northern Lights holidays in Finland run from the return of dark Arctic nights in autumn through winter and into early spring.

Deep winter brings the classic Lapland landscape of snow-covered forests and frozen lakes, along with long dark nights and the full range of winter activities. Autumn offers a very different Finland, with milder temperatures and colourful landscapes, while later winter and March bring increasing daylight without losing the snowy Arctic setting.

There isn’t a date on which the Northern Lights are guaranteed – they remain a natural phenomenon – so the right time to travel also depends on what you want to do during the day.

Inari sits beside vast Lake Inari and combines wilderness, culture and excellent Aurora potential. Depending on the holiday, you can also stay in locations such as Muotka, Nangu, Levi, Saija and Ranua.

Your Words
The guides were excellent and really made an effort to do as much as they could for us. The Aurora hunting, husky safari and snowmobiling were particular highlights, and the whole holiday was very well organised.
