The wait is over. The Northern Lights are back!
On 6th September 2026, the skies above Finland came alive with a spectacular display of the Northern Lights, marking an exciting start to the new season.
And this was the view…
For us, seeing the first images of the season is always an exciting moment. After the light nights of the Arctic summer, darkness is finally returning to the north, bringing with it new opportunities to witness something incredible.
But you don’t have to wait for snow to go searching for the Aurora!
In fact, September and October can be a fantastic time to experience the Northern Lights.
Why can you see the Northern Lights in Autumn?
The Northern Lights can occur throughout the year, but during the summer months in the Arctic, the skies simply don’t get dark enough for us to see them.
As summer comes to an end, darkness gradually returns to Lapland. By September, there are enough hours of darkness to give travellers the opportunity to spot the Northern Lights.
The display on 6th September is an exciting reminder that Northern Lights season doesn’t begin with winter – it begins with the return of dark skies.

What is Finnish Lapland like in Autumn?
When you picture a Northern Lights holiday, you might imagine snow-covered forests, frozen lakes and temperatures well below zero.
Autumn offers something completely different.
Before the snow arrives, Finnish Lapland is covered in shades of red, orange and gold during a short but spectacular period known locally as Ruska.
With the return of darker nights comes the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights dance above the colourful Autumn landscape.
It’s a side of Lapland that many people have never considered, and one that can feel very different from a traditional winter escape.

Is September a good time to see the Northern Lights?
September can offer excellent opportunities to search for the Aurora.
No Northern Lights display can ever be guaranteed; that’s part of what makes seeing them so special, but travelling during Autumn gives you darkening skies without having to wait until the winter months.
The landscape also opens up different possibilities for Aurora photography. With lakes and rivers yet to freeze, a clear, calm night can sometimes create beautiful reflections of the Northern Lights on the water.
And as the display on 6th September has already shown, the Aurora can certainly make an impressive appearance early in the season.
