Why March is a Prime Month for Northern Lights Viewing – The Science Behind the Spectacle

March’s reputation as one of the best times to see the Northern Lights consistently backed by science.

The magic begins with the spring equinox, a point in the year when the Earth’s axis is perfectly positioned in relation to the sun. During this time, the Earth’s magnetic field interacts more effectively with charged particles from the sun. This causes an increase in geomagnetic activity. In simple terms: more solar energy reaches our atmosphere. That often results in brighter, more frequent Aurora displays!

When these charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, they release energy in the form of light. This is what is commonly known as the Aurora Borealis. The stronger the geomagnetic activity, the more vivid the colours can become. They range from soft greens to intense pinks and purples dancing across the sky.

Let’s take a look…

Alongside this scientific advantage, March brings a balance of dark skies and more comfortable temperatures. While deep winter can offer long nights, it can also mean extreme cold. This limits the time spent outdoors. In March, you can often stay outside longer. This allows more opportunities to keep watch for the Aurora without the harsh bite of mid-winter conditions.

So, with enhanced geomagnetic activity, dark skies, and more comfortable viewing conditions, March offers a scientifically supported sweet spot for Aurora hunters looking to witness the Northern Lights at their best.

What do our Expert Astronomers say?

Expert astronomers Dan Monk and Matt Robinson both agree that March is one of the very best times to visit Finland. In fact, they believe in it so strongly that in March 2026 they’re leading a special Escorted Tour. It is a five-day journey through Finland’s most spectacular Northern Lights viewing locations and astronomy hotspots.

The pair hosted the same trip last March. The feedback was so overwhelmingly positive that they couldn’t wait to offer it again. Although the tour centres on the science of the Aurora, with fascinating insights and storytelling from Dan and Matt, the extended daylight in March also gives guests the chance to enjoy a range of classic Arctic experiences. These include snowmobiling to husky safaris. Ultimately, this trip is about slowing down, immersing yourself in nature, and discovering the mesmerizing science behind the Northern Lights. It’s an opportunity to witness the Arctic at its most enchanting. It is guided by two experts who are passionate about sharing the magic of the night skies.
