Tromsø & Sommarøy – City and Island Auroras in Autumn

  • Details

Details

Your Arctic adventure begins in the vibrant city of Tromso. Far from being a sleepy outpost, Tromso offers a lively atmosphere and a distinctly cosmopolitan feel with excellent eateries, welcoming cafes and plenty to discover. The city's unique location, built on a large island connected to the mainland, is surrounded by picturesque mountains and fjords, a constant reminder that wilderness is never far away.

Throughout September and October, the mountainsides take on rich shades of copper and the first dustings of snow begin to appear on the surrounding peaks making autumn a particularly special time to visit. During your stay, you'll venture out onto the waters around the city on a scenic fjord cruise. You'll also travel beyond the bright city lights in search of the Northern Lights in a dedicated minibus hunt. Your expert local guide will lead the chase using the latest weather forecasts and solar activity readings to determine your route in search of clear skies and the best possible viewing conditions.

From Tromsø, you'll continue to the beautiful island of Sommarøy, where the pace of life slows considerably. Here, white-sand beaches, bright fishermen's cottages, rugged mountains and the vibrant colours of autumn combine to create a picture perfect landscape.

Wildlife is very much part of the experience here. One of the highlights of your stay is a sea eagle safari, taking you out onto the waters around Sommarøy in search of these magnificent birds. Keep your eyes trained on the cliffs, islands and shoreline as your local guide looks for sightings of white-tailed sea eagles, one of the largest birds of prey in Europe. Watching one of these impressive birds sweep across the fjord against a backdrop of autumn mountains is unforgettable.

And, of course, Sommarøy is an excellent place to look for the Northern Lights. With very little light pollution and an extraordinary backdrop of mountains, sea and open sky, you can simply step outside and look up when conditions are favourable.

This is an Arctic escape that brings together the energy and culture of Tromsø and the tranquillity of Sommarøy, with beautiful scenery, autumn colours, Arctic wildlife and two very different ways to experience the region both by day and after dark. From searching for the Northern Lights to heading out in search of white-tailed sea eagles, it's a chance to experience northern Norway at one of its most atmospheric times of year.

Important Information

The sea eagle safari operates on Wednesdays and Saturdays only throughout the autumn season which is why this trip operates on set departure dates. If you’d prefer to travel on alternative dates, we can arrange an itinerary with free time in Sommaroy – our Travel Experts would be happy to discuss any alternative arrangements with you.

Itinerary

Your holiday begins in Tromso, where a taxi will be waiting at the airport to take you to your hotel for check-in. This cosmopolitan city offers a vibrant mix of restaurants and shops as well as many fascinating attractions to enjoy. We would highly recommend an early arrival (or we can help you arrange an extended stay at the start or end of your holiday) in order to maximise your time here and explore your surroundings.

Please note that the order of activities within your itinerary is subject to change and the agenda below should be used as a guide only.

Clarion Hotel The Edge - Check In
Address : Tromso, Troms County, Norway

After breakfast at your hotel, it’s time to set sail on the Arctic waters surrounding Tromso. As you leave the harbour behind, the landscape quickly becomes wilder, with rugged mountains rising from the water and autumn colours adding rich tones to the hillsides. Keep watch as you cruise through the Arctic waters, as this is a wonderful area for spotting wildlife.

This five-hour sightseeing tour takes you through the beautiful fjords and towards the open sea. Your guide will share their knowledge of the landscape and point out any wildlife you encounter along the way.

There’s plenty of time simply to enjoy the scenery, too. Settle into the warm cabins onboard with a hot drink and a snack, or head outside when you’re ready to take in the crisp Arctic air and uninterrupted views.

Returning to Tromsø in the afternoon, you’ll have some time to relax before the evening’s adventure begins. As darkness falls, you’ll head out of the city on your first dedicated Northern Lights hunt. Travelling by minibus gives your guide the freedom to move away from Tromsø’s lights and, where possible, around areas of localised cloud cover.

Your experienced guide will monitor the latest weather forecasts and solar activity throughout the evening, using their knowledge of the region to decide where to go in search of clear skies and the best possible Aurora viewing conditions. The hunt can last around six to nine hours, so there’s plenty of time to explore the surrounding landscape beneath the Arctic night sky

As you travel through the autumn landscape, with dark mountains rising around you and the night stretching out overhead, there’s a wonderful sense of anticipation as you wait for the first hint of green to appear in the sky. Hopefully, your patience will be rewarded with a spectacular display.

Included Meals: Breakfast

Clarion Hotel The Edge - Stay
Address : Tromso, Troms County, Norway

Following breakfast, you will leave Tromsø and make for the small island of Sommarøy. It is not often that the transfer is part of the highlights but the drive to Sommarøy is breathtaking, showcasing the dramatic landscape highlighted with autumn colours. The hotel’s shuttle will leave Tromso at approximately 10:30 this morning from the nearby Scandic Ishavshotell (less than five minutes walk from your hotel) and takes around 1 hour in total. Private transfer upgrades are possible for a supplement.

Sommarøy has strong fishing traditions and the village is often a hive of activity as vessels make their way in and out of the small harbour. The beaches are strangely reminiscent of more tropical climates with white sands and crystal-clear water; it is only the cooler temperatures and the colourful fishermen’s cottages that give their location away.

You will be able to make your own way around this small gem of an island and explore at leisure today.

Lunch and dinner will be enjoyed at the hotel restaurant.

Sommarøy Arctic Hotel - Stay
Address : Sommaroy, Tromso, Norway

Today, after breakfast in your hotel, you’ll head out onto the waters around Sommarøy in search of one of the Arctic’s most impressive birds of prey – the white-tailed sea eagle. The islands and cliffs around the archipelago are home to a healthy population of these magnificent birds throughout the year, and seeing one soaring above the coastline is a truly memorable sight.

You’ll travel in a comfortable, heated boat, exploring the islands and rocky shoreline with your guide keeping a watchful eye out for sea eagles. With wingspans of more than two metres, these birds are an impressive sight, particularly when they swoop low over the water in search of fish. The waters around Sommarøy are also home to a variety of other wildlife, so keep watch for sea otters, harbour porpoises, tysties and other seabirds along the way.

Weather permitting, your adventure will continue along the wild and exposed coastline of Senja, where you’ll go ashore to visit the historic Hekkingen Lighthouse. Accompanied by your guide, you’ll explore the lighthouse before climbing the tower, where you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree panorama across the surrounding islands, sea and rugged coastline.

Lunch and dinner will be enjoyed at the hotel restaurant.

Additional Info

This trip is based on Wednesday and Sunday departures.

Please note: This holiday is a city break and as such operates quite differently to some of our other holidays in more remote locations. Because of your central base in the city, your activities will start at various meeting points (full details and directions will be provided in your final travel documents) which you will need to walk to (or arrange your own taxi unless otherwise stated) in good time for the activity to begin. You will then normally be met by a bus which will either take you directly out on your activity or to a central meeting point from where you will then head out on your adventure.

For environmental reasons and to pass on the cost saving benefit to our clients on some of our holidays based within a city, we may also make use of scheduled shared airport shuttle buses. These will stop near your hotel but there may be a short walk (with your luggage) due to traffic restrictions.? To check what is standard within your itinerary please check the ‘what’s included’ section. We can arrange private taxi transfers if you prefer (upgrade costs will apply). Our travel experts will be happy to provide more information.

Due to the city location, the group sizes for activities and transfers will be larger than some of our other holidays. We have lots of itineraries to suit everyone. So, if you enjoy the buzz of a city and like to explore its sights and sounds in your free time, then this holiday is a great option for you. If you prefer a more remote destination with activities on site, then please ask one of our travel experts who would be very happy to make some suggestions.
