Sweden & Norway – ICEHOTEL, Abisko and Norwegian Fjords
- Details
Details
Experience the changing landscape of the Arctic as you journey north across two countries in your search for the Northern Lights.
First on the agenda is Sweden, where your holiday gets off to an unforgettable start with a night at the ICEHOTEL®. You can enjoy a drink in the ice bar, see the intricate sculptures and enjoy a three-course dinner which includes a selection of locally sourced ingredients served in a unique way. Following this, you will retire to your ice room. Don't worry, you'll keep warm with the special thermal bedding provided so you can lie back and enjoy one of the coolest hotels in the north. In the morning, you can unwind with a sauna before trying your hand at carving an ice sculpture, so you can really see the work that goes into the magnificent hotel. You will also take to the wilderness in a husky sled driven by your expert musher, to experience one of the most traditional (and most fun) forms of transport in the Arctic. You can also choose to upgrade your activity and drive your own dog sled if you prefer.
Your Swedish adventure continues as you are transferred to the stunning mountain region of Abisko National Park. Here, you will explore the landscape by snowmobile as well as chasing the Northern Lights in prime Aurora territory.
From Abisko you will journey from the Swedish mountains to the awe-inspiring fjords of Norway. As well as exploring this historic town at your leisure you can make the most of the spectacular scenery surrounding you by using your ticket for the cable car to the top of Narvikfjellet which overlooks the town. We have also included a night of searching for the Aurora aboard the Northern Lights train, which takes you up into the mountains behind Narvik for a truly unique experience.
In Narvik you can be as busy or as relaxed as you wish. You can add extra activities such as a visit to the Polar Park, the world's northernmost wildlife centre and home to some of the Arctic's largest predators such as bears and lynx. Alternatively, you could go on a Northern Lights boat tour, or a fjord and mountain tour by car, or you can just explore at your own pace and take in attractions such as the War Museum and fish market, which has an excellent restaurant also.
For a Northern Lights journey that allows you to search for the magical Aurora in unforgettable landscapes, to travel between two countries in the heart of the Arctic winter, and to try the most sought-after winter activities, this holiday covers it all.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kiruna Airport, you will be met and transferred to the impressive and world-first ICEHOTEL®. You will have time to admire the magnificent ice sculptures, have a drink in the ice bar and explore the ice chapel.
This evening you will enjoy a classic three-course dinner which includes a selection of locally-sourced ingredients, served with a unique twist.
Tonight you will have the brilliant opportunity of sleeping inside one of the ice rooms. Tucked up in your Arctic-grade sleeping bag, you will be very cosy as you sleep in one of the coolest accommodations available. Check in time for the ice rooms at the Icehotel is 6pm, while for warm rooms and deluxe suites it is 3pm. If your travel arrangements would make an earlier check in more suitable for you, please speak to one of our Travel Experts who will be happy to explain the options.
Included Meals: Dinner

Today, after waking up in your ice room, you will enjoy hot lingonberry juice and a warm sauna before your hearty breakfast.
After admiring all the sculptures around the hotel, it’s time for you to let your creative side out and learn how to carve your very own ice sculpture. Your guide will show you how to use the carving tools as you gain brilliant insight into the intricate work that goes into creating the hotel.
You will take lunch at the hotel, before taking an unforgettable tour of the pristine winter wilderness in the company of your musher and his eager team of huskies. Please do take a camera as there will be plenty of photo opportunities along the route and of course with the dogs at the end of your excursion. You will travel as passengers during this tour and you will break for warm drinks and cake around an open fire. You will be out for approximately 1.5 hours in total, including transfers, instruction and breaks. If you would like to upgrade to drive your own team of dogs, please speak to our Travel Experts.
Later this afternoon you will transfer to the stunning mountainous region of Abisko National Park and check into your hotel (approximately 1.5 hours transfer time). After settling in at the hotel you will enjoy a three course dinner this evening.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Fill up on breakfast ahead of your Arctic adventure of a lifetime.
Today, you will go on a snowmobile safari which allows you to venture deeper into the mountains, twisting through valleys and negotiating frozen lakes with ease. You will receive cold weather clothing and a full briefing before setting out with two people sharing a snowmobile, and plenty of stops so you can take pictures and swap over drivers. The activity will last for approximately 2 hours, including tuition, breaks and transfers. Both drivers must hold a full driving licence and be aged 18 or over. If you would like to upgrade to a longer, 4 hour tour, please speak to our Travel Experts.
After a buffet lunch at the hotel you will have some free time this afternoon and you could always take advantage of the sauna facilities.
This evening you will have the services of a professional Aurora guide who, armed with the very latest information on the weather and Aurora forecast, will escort you on a quest to find the Lights in a warm and well-appointed minibus. There are many locations that you will have access to on the hunt, including the shore of Lake Tornetrask and the top of Bear Mountain. This activity starts after dinner and lasts approximately 3 hours.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Following breakfast, you will be picked up outside your hotel for the impressive 90 minute (approximately) road journey that takes you from frozen Swedish mountains to the magnificent fjords of Norway.
Upon arrival, you will transfer to your hotel and have time to settle in and choose one of the local restaurants for dinner.
You also have a ticket to ride the cable car to the top of Narvikfjellet included, so tonight why not enjoy the 7-minute ride to the peak which is 659 meters above the town. If conditions are favourable, this is a brilliant stop to witness a Northern Lights display. The cable car is a 25-minute walk from the hotel but it is also very easy to arrange a local taxi from the hotel if you prefer.
We recommend an early dinner this evening, as tonight you will head out on one of the most unique Aurora viewing opportunities there is – the Northern Lights Train. The train station is a 15-20 minute walk away from your hotel and, on arrival, the guides will welcome you on board, before you journey out of Narvik and up into the mountains beyond, heading towards the Swedish border. You will hear stories about the surrounding area and stop at two small stations as you head up the mountain. At 374 metres above sea level, Katterat Station is perfectly situated, should weather conditions be favourable and the Northern Lights make an appearance tonight. Your guides will make a campfire, and you will enjoy hot drinks and pastries as you search the skies above. The train is equipped with toilets, and a small drinks kiosk, as well as free WiFi. You will be out for approximately 3.5 hours in total this evening. Please note that the Northern Lights train in Narvik only operates on Mondays and Thursdays and is dependent on weather conditions (timetable subject to change).
Included Meals: Breakfast

Today you have the opportunity to explore Narvik at your own pace. Local points of interest include the War Museum and the fish market in the town square, where you can also buy a delicious meal which could not be any fresher!
Alternatively, if you would like to be more active you can add further activities to your itinerary. These include a visit to the Polar Park wildlife centre, a fjord and mountains tour by car, and a Northern Lights Boat Tour. Please see the ‘Personalise Tour’ section for additional activity options.
Please note that the Northern Lights Train activity may be scheduled for this evening instead, depending on timetables.
Included Meals: Breakfast

Today is, unfortunately, the end of your time in the Arctic. Following breakfast, we will transfer you to the airport for your return flights home. If you have an early flight time, breakfast will be boxed up for you to take with you.

The ICEHOTEL® at Jukkasjärvi has the impressive claim of being the world’s first ice hotel, having been developed in 1989. Now it is one of the most well-known and exclusive hotels in the world, with only a handful of people being lucky enough to stay in each incarnation of this ice and snow masterpiece. Each year, architects, designers and artists submit designs for the classic hotel’s features and a handful are chosen to go forward with their theme. The structure is a marvel to see and, come summer, simply melts back into the river from which it came.
The hotel complex consists of several buildings including the classic ice building and ICEHOTEL 365 (the year-round structure).
ICEHOTEL 365The hotel now boasts ICEHOTEL 365, a permanent structure, allowing guests to enjoy the experience year-round. Containing deluxe rooms, art suites, an ice bar and a sculpture hall, this environmentally sustainable building is a construct of glass, metal and concrete, but with the same incredible standard and visual design of snow and ice on the inside, with cooling tubes to keep it at a temperature of around -5 at all times. The Classic ICEHOTEL®The classic ICEHOTEL® building, is constructed purely of ice and snow and carefully crafted each December, utilising blocks of ice from the nearby Torne River.
Home to ice rooms, suites, and a chapel, it is a real thing of beauty.
The rooms which are contained within the ice and snow building tend to be available until mid-December (approximately 11-14th, depending on conditions) to the end of March. Check-in time for the cold rooms is usually around 6pm (and for the warm rooms, it is approximately 3pm). The ICEHOTEL® is open to members of the public for viewing between 10am and 6pm. You will check out after breakfast.

Ice Rooms in the classic ICEHOTEL® - Cold Accommodation
The ice rooms are the simplest rooms which are included as standard. These are made of ice and snow, and each contains a mattress topped with reindeer skins and also some ice furniture and simple carvings. They are closed off from the corridors via thick curtains as opposed to doors, but the thick walls of ice and snow allow for great sound insulation. There are typically around 15 rooms available for guests. Check-in is from 6pm once the structure closes to visitors.
Art Suites in the classic ICEHOTEL® - Cold Accommodation
These are uniquely and beautifully designed by chosen artists around the world each year and offer a wide variety of themes. As with the ice rooms, these have curtains instead of doors and there are around 15 in total for guests to book. Please note, that we cannot book a specific suite for you, so you will be allocated a suite on arrival, and we are not able to control which one. Check-in is from 6pm once the structure closes to visitors.
Deluxe Suites in the ICEHOTEL®365 - Cold Accommodation
The unique and enchanting Deluxe Suites 365 are individually themed and hand-carved by artists commissioned from around the world, with the designs changing each year. To spend a night amidst the lifelike and exquisite carvings is a surreal and magical experience. A sauna session then awaits you before you enjoy a delicious breakfast. The Deluxe Suites are part of the ICEHOTEL 365, available all year round thanks to a new specially designed building which is run on solar power. There are three different types of Deluxe suite available, please ask our team for details.
Art Suites in ICEHOTEL®365 - Cold Accommodation
These offer the same amenities as the art suites in the classic ice building but being part of the permanent building allows them to have a proper door. Each is independently designed by handpicked artists and architects to reflect the annual theme. There are 12 art suites in total.

They are housed in single storey buildings or between 6 and 8 rooms.
