This three-night break combines the comfort of the Lodge with some of the regions most exciting winter experiences. From travelling through the snowy wilderness by snowmobile and mushing a team of enthusiastic huskies to searching for the Northern Lights beneath the dark, Arctic sky, each day brings a new adventure.
Your stay is on a half-board basis, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the excellent cuisine at Maku restaurant, overlooking the river, while spending your days exploring. And for the ultimate Arctic experience, why not upgrade for one night of your stay to the extraordinary Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel.
The Igloo Hotel is rebuilt from snow and ice every winter, creating an ever-changing work of art. Staying overnight in this remarkable environment is an experience unlike any other, combining the beauty of the frozen Arctic landscape with the warmth and comfort of a carefully prepared sleeping environment.
Alta is renowned as one of the best places in Norway from which to experience the Northern Lights. Away from city lights and surrounded by vast wilderness, Sorrisniva offers an exceptional setting for your Aurora adventure.
You can also make your Arctic adventure truly unforgettable by upgrading one night to the spectacular Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel.

Northern Lights sightings are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed. Your guides will use their local knowledge and weather forecasts to maximise your chances of seeing the Aurora.
All activities are subject to weather and snow conditions. In the event that conditions are unsuitable, the local operator may adapt the activity or provide an alternative experience.
Cold-weather clothing is provided during the included activities. You should bring suitable warm clothing and footwear for use outside of these activities.
The whale safari operates from 10 December to 31 January. The King Crab experience operates from 1 February to 31 March. The included experience therefore depends on your departure date.
Itinerary
On arrival at Alta Airport, you will be met and transferred to Sorrisniva (approximately 25 minutes), your spectacular Arctic base for the next three nights.
Sorrisniva feels a world away from everyday life. After checking in to your river view room, you can settle into the peaceful surroundings and enjoy your first evening in the Arctic.
Dinner is included at the lodge this evening.

After breakfast, you will experience the freedom of exploring the Arctic wilderness by snowmobile. Your knowledgeable guide will introduce you to the machines and explain everything you need to know before heading out into the spectacular winter scenery, journeying up the Alta river valley and up to the inland plateau.
Later this evening, leave Sorrisniva behind and head out in search of the Northern Lights by car. Your experienced local guide will use their knowledge of the area and the latest weather conditions to seek out the clearest skies and best opportunities for an Aurora display.
Away from artificial light, the wilderness surrounding Alta provides a wonderful setting for watching the night sky. With a little luck, you will see the Northern Lights dancing overhead.

This morning brings another classic Arctic experience as you meet the friendly huskies at Holmen Husky.
After being introduced to the dogs and learning about life at the husky farm, you’ll head out into the snowy wilderness behind your own team of eager sled dogs. Gliding quietly through the forest and across the winter landscape, dog sledding is one of the most memorable ways to experience the Arctic.
Later, depending on your departure date, you’ll have the choice of another unforgettable Arctic experience.
Between 10 December and 31 January, enjoy a whale safari in the waters around Alta, offering the opportunity to experience the spectacular Arctic marine environment and look out for whales and other wildlife.
Between 1 February and 31 March, this is replaced by a King Crab experience, giving you the chance to discover one of the most famous delicacies of Northern Norway and learn more about life and traditions in the far north.

After breakfast, it is unfortunately time to leave the Arctic wilderness behind.
You’ll be transferred from Sorrisniva back to Alta Airport for your journey home, taking home memories of an unforgettable Arctic adventure.

Please note: This holiday is a city break and as such operates quite differently to some of our other holidays in more remote locations. Because of your central base in the city, your activities will start at various meeting points (full details and directions will be provided in your final travel documents) which you will need to walk to (or arrange your own taxi unless otherwise stated) in good time for the activity to begin. You will then normally be met by a bus which will either take you directly out on your activity or to a central meeting point from where you will then head out on your adventure.
For environmental reasons and to pass on the cost saving benefit to our clients on some of our holidays based within a city, we may also make use of scheduled shared airport shuttle buses. These will stop near your hotel but there may be a short walk (with your luggage) due to traffic restrictions. To check what is standard within your itinerary please check the ‘what’s included’ section. We can arrange private taxi transfers if you prefer (upgrade costs will apply). Our travel experts will be happy to provide more information.
Due to the city location, the group sizes for activities and transfers will be larger than some of our other holidays. We have lots of itineraries to suit everyone. So, if you enjoy the buzz of a city and like to explore its sights and sounds in your free time, then this holiday is a great option for you.
