With just seven double rooms, this family-run hideaway is perfect for a romantic break or a getaway with close friends. Situated on the outskirts of Kiruna, Máttaráhká Northern Lights Lodge has direct access to the pristine Arctic wilderness providing guests an idyllic escape from the busyness or everyday life.

Itinerary
A warm welcome awaits you at Máttaráhká Northern Lights Lodge. You’ll be met by a friendly member of the team at Kiruna airport and escorted to the resort. Once you’re checked in and settled into your stylish room, you’ll have the chance to collect your arctic clothing consisting of a down jacket and pants, winter boots, hat and gloves. Dinner will be served in a traditional, Lappish tipi called a kota; the perfect introduction to your winter getaway. This evening will conclude with an Aurora hunt via minivan. The minivan provides speed and flexibility, allowing the group to change direction and reach further vantage points quickly. Your expert guide will use technology and their own instinct to help you find the Northern Lights and if the conditions are right you will visit the Aurora hotspot of Abisko. Hopefully, you’ll have the chance to see a magnificent display on your first night!

Enjoy a hearty breakfast in the dining room before embarking on a Sami and reindeer experience. Discover the fascinating history and culture of the indigenous people of north Scandinavia. Get up close to the reindeer and enjoy a sleigh ride through the frozen forests. Your knowledgeable guide will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and of course, take those all important photos. Picture yourself curled up with a good book and a drink of your choice in front of the crackling fire in the open-plan lounge this afternoon. There’ll be some space to enjoy some down time or maybe you’ll prefer to collect a pair of complimentary snowshoes and continue exploring the glistening wilderness. Following dinner in a kota, you’ll have the opportunity to take your very own snowmobile for a spin. You’ll travel like a local over the snowy terrain to Mount Ednavaara. Here, you’ll have 360 degree panoramic views over the mountain range and an optimum position should the Northern Lights make an appearance. After soaking up the spectacular scenery, you’ll drive back through the unparalleled landscape to the lodge. You will travel two per snowmobile with the opportunity to swap drivers. Please note, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a full driving licence to drive a snowmobile.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to drive a team of huskies? After breakfast, you’ll have the opportunity to put your mushing skills to the test. The sled dogs will be so excited to see you and desperate to take you on a safari through the forest. As you twist and turn along the trail, keep an eye out for other wildlife and savour the unspoilt nature. You’ll swap with your partner midway through the activity as they take the lead, and you enjoy a comfortable seat in the cosy sleigh. There will be space in the itinerary today to spend time as you please. Maybe you’ll grab a pair of complimentary cross-country skis or maybe you’ll indulge in some quality R and R gazing across the breathtaking views from the lodge. Winter escapes don’t get more magical than this evening’s activity; a rooftop hot tub session beneath a star-studded blanket. Here, you even have the chance to try your hand at ice fishing, a quintessential Swedish winter activity! Lunch will be enjoyed back at the Lodge on your return.
