Nestled at the base of Iceland's largest fjord, Akureyri sits in a valley framed by magnificent peaks. This picturesque city offers a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure and a vibrant local scene.

During this three-night Iceland getaway you'll get to experience the very best of Iceland' striking north, which showcases nature, Northern Lights, lakes and lagoons.

The base for your time in Iceland is the welcoming Hotel KEA, which combines historical charm with modern comforts. The hotel benefits from an unbeatable location and is just a short distance from the airport, meaning your holiday kick starts straight away.

We've included a highlights tour of Lake Myvatn. Known as the 'Jewel of the North' you'll experience some of the most spectacular and unique landscapes in Iceland. See waterfalls, lava sculptures, bubbling mud pits, underground caves, volcanoes and craters.

Voyage on the beautiful Eyjafjord in the search of whales, journey into the night on the hunt for the Northern Lights and unwind in the peaceful geothermal pools of the Forest Lagoon.

Itinerary

Day1: Arrival and Northern Lights Hunt

Upon arrival at Akureyri airport, you’ll take a private transfer to your hotel in the centre of Akureyri. Once you’re checked in, you have a few hours to settle in ahead of your evening activity.

Although no meals are included today, reservations at restaurants can be arranged (and are payable locally).

This evening, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and set off on the hunt for the Northern Lights. Your driver and guide knows of the prime spots for the search tonight, and will ensure you have the best possible chance to see the Northern Lights by outrunning any light pollution and cloud cover. Enjoy hot drinks as you search the sky. You’ll be out for around 2.5 hours, including transfers.

Hotel KEA - Check In

Day2: Lake Mývatn

Today is your chance to witness the unparalleled beauty of Lake Myvatn. After a hearty breakfast, your transfer will collect you from your hotel ready for the day ahead.

Visit the impressive Godafoss waterfall, known as ‘Waterfall of the Gods’. Walk amongst unusual lava sculptures, pillars and caves in Dimmuborgir. Learn about Icelandic lore and the local ‘trolls’ from your expert guide.

After a day of sightseeing (you’ll be out for around 7 hours, including transfers), you’ll be dropped off back at your hotel ahead of a free evening.

Day3: Whale Safari and Forest Lagoon

Following breakfast, it’s time to embark on the search for whales*. The meeting point this morning is Akureyri Whale Watching Centre, just a short walk from your hotel.

The waters of Eyjafjörður have an abundance of diverse marine life, with a high success rate for whale spotting. Aboard the boat, which is specifically modified and dedicated for safe whale watching encounters, are spectacular viewing platforms, as well as ample indoor and outdoor seating. Your guides will share their expert knowledge about the wildlife, nature and history of the area as you search the waters for wildlife. You’ll be out for approximately 3 hours in total.

Your final evening in Akureryi will be spent at the peaceful Forest Lagoon. The geothermal pools are naturally rich in minerals and possess apparent healing qualities, and with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and twinkling town below, the setting is the perfect trip finale. You’ll have 2 hours to enjoy the Forest Lagoon, and transfers are included.

In such a short stay, you’ll get to experience the very best of Northern Iceland. Seeing the impressive Goðafoss waterfall and relaxing in the Forest Lagoon were personal highlights. Bathing in the warm infinity pool while surrounded by pristine winter landscapes was just sublime.

Please note: This holiday is a city break and as such operates quite differently to some of our other holidays in more remote locations. Because of your central base in the city, your activities will start at various meeting points (full details and directions will be provided in your final travel documents) which you will need to walk to (or arrange your own taxi unless otherwise stated) in good time for the activity to begin. You will then normally be met by a bus which will either take you directly out on your activity or to a central meeting point from where you will then head out on your adventure.

For environmental reasons and to pass on the cost saving benefit to our clients on some of our holidays based within a city, we may also make use of scheduled shared airport shuttle buses. These will stop near your hotel but there may be a short walk (with your luggage) due to traffic restrictions. To check what is standard within your itinerary please check the ‘what’s included’ section. We can arrange private taxi transfers if you prefer (upgrade costs will apply). Our travel experts will be happy to provide more information.

Due to the city location, the group sizes for activities and transfers will be larger than some of our other holidays. We have lots of itineraries to suit everyone. So, if you enjoy the buzz of a city and like to explore its sights and sounds in your free time, then this holiday is a great option for you.
