February 2025 astronomy arrives, and winter loosens its grip.
We often seek spring’s first signs in blooming snowdrops, but the night sky also whispers change. Each season, familiar constellations return, guiding us through time.
Look east at midnight, and you’ll see Leo the Lion rising—a celestial herald of spring, reminding us that warmer days are near.
Full Snow Moon | February 12
February’s Full Moon, the luminous Snow Moon, will shine at its brightest on February 12th. Named by Native American and European traditions, it honors the deep snows that blanket the land this time of year.
As daylight fades, watch the moon rise in the east opposite the sun’s fiery farewell in the west.

A Month of Planets | Whole Month
Just like in January, six planets—Saturn, Venus, Neptune, Uranus, Jupiter, and Mars—grace the evening sky. Bright Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, and orange-hued Mars are easily visible, but Uranus and Neptune require dark skies or telescopes.
By late February, Mercury joins the lineup, though Saturn and Neptune fade low on the southwestern horizon after sunset.

Zodiacal Light | Late February
For those in dark-sky locations, late February offers a chance to see the faint glow of the zodiacal light.
Zodiacal light is a faint, triangular glow visible after sunset in spring or before dawn in autumn. It’s caused by sunlight scattering off interplanetary dust along the plane of the solar system. Best seen in dark, moonless skies, this eerie glow follows the zodiac, revealing remnants of ancient cosmic collisions and the solar system’s dusty past.

Aurora! | All Month
February is well known as a month there the amount of displays of the aurora increases as we get closer to the spring equinox.
During the equinoxes, Earth’s tilt aligns its magnetic field with the solar wind, making it easier for charged particles to enter the atmosphere. This boosts auroral activity, creating more frequent and intense northern lights.
